CORNWALL, Ontario – A new attraction with an historic twist has been recognized for its tourism potential.

The Historic Walking Tour was the recipient of the Tourism Impact Award at the annual Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence and Citizen of the Year Awards on Saturday, February 24that the NAV Centre.

The tour gives visitors and residents alike a chance to walk back in time and experience Cornwall’s rich history through a collection of 30 plaques erected at key points throughout the waterfront, Downtown and Le Village areas.

Each plaque depicts an era, event or landmark from the City’s past and features the artwork of renowned Cornwall artist Pierre Giroux.

The Walking Tour is an initiative of Heart of the City in collaboration with the Downtown and Le Village Business Improvement Areas, the City of Cornwall and numerous other partners.

“Heart of the City and our partners at Le Village and the Downtown BIA are so pleased the walking tour has received this award,” said Centretown Coordinator Todd Lihou. “The walking tour ties local history together through some incredible artwork by Cornwall’s own Pierre Giroux, and came from an idea fostered by Dr. Michel Dubuc. All of us express our thanks to the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce and our nominator for this prestigious award.”

In addition to showcasing Cornwall’s history, the tour also complements the City’s popular waterfront recreational path and provides links to other waterfront attractions including the Cornwall Community Museum and the St. Lawrence Power Development Visitor Centre.
