Cailuan Gallery makes the move downtown

Like a breath of fresh air (or a coat of fresh paint) Cornwall’s newest art gallery is setting up shop downtown.

Cailuan Gallery, located at 225 Pitt Street, will open its doors to the public on March 25 at 10 a.m.

Owner Tracy Lynn Davies said the decision to open a gallery downtown is rooted in the fact that this area of Cornwall is becoming an anchor point for those looking to work, eat and play.

“We needed something central. Artists need a place to show that has foot traffic – where we can be seen and included in what is happening,” she said. “We have the Apples and Arts Tour which brings thousands of people to downtown and in Lamoureux Park. And if we are lucky enough to have the arts centre which will be located in the civic area, then this area just becomes a hive. We want to be a part of that.”

Davies and her supporting cast have jumped in with both feet, renovating a former learning centre into a gallery that will include equal parts commercial space, classrooms and private studios.

Cailuan Gallery will offer everything from paintings, to jewelry, sculptures and glass. Much of the material will be produced by local artists, but there are already expressions of interest from producers outside of Cornwall who want to take advantage of the buzz being created downtown in the Seaway City.

“We want to support our local artists, but we do have a lot of interest from Gananoque and Ottawa,” said Davies. “We have a lot of people who are submitting right now.

“We will have art that is juried in.”

Local artist Sandra Taylor-Hedges will serve as curator at Cailuan Gallery.

Artists looking to hone their skills can take part in classes that will be hosted at Cailuan later this year, and others can host classes in that space themselves. Childrens workshops are being planned as well.

“We very excited to be able to offer this kind of gallery to the citizens of Cornwall and area, as well as our artists – who work so hard to bring their craft to light,” said Davies.
