CORNWALL, Ontario – The sweet taste of success is wafting through downtown Cornwall.
Fairy Sweet, headed by Sue-Anne Heitmann and her family, was named the first-ever winner of the WIN THIS SPACE contest, sponsored by the Downtown Business Improvement Area.
Fairy Sweet, a scratch bakery that specializes in cakes and desserts of all kinds, will be setting up its new location downtown in the weeks ahead.
“We’re so thrilled to be named the first-ever winner of the DBIA’s Win This Space competition,” said Heitmann, following the finale hosted at ESCA Gourmet Pizza+Bar on Oct. 23. “We love the atmosphere downtown and we’re excited to bring our own brand of cakes, desserts and positivity to the heart of our city.”
Win This Space will provide Fairy Sweet with $1,000 a month for an entire year to cover lease costs.
“We’ve proven that this concept works and we’re so pleased with all of the submissions we received,” said Brenda Campbell, chair of the Downtown BIA. “The final decision was incredibly difficult because of the strong field of finalists who worked incredibly hard on their business plans and presentations.
A dozen submissions were submitted to the DBIA this summer, which were whittled down to five finalists. Presentations from Fairy Sweet, Crush Lane Jewellery, FanSaves and Bee Real Products were made to a group of local business professionals who scored the contestants on market demand, budgeting, polish and their fit downtown.
